Age of first tattoo: 17 in a guy's (not a tattooer) bedroom. They were little music notes on my foot that are now completely covered up by my yellow roses.

Favorite tattoo: I have two russian nesting dolls on my right forearm, one for each of my little sisters Chase and Chandler who are my favorite people in the world!


Featured tattoo/location: The 70's inspired owl on my upper left arm.


Artist/shop/location of feature tattoo: The first of many by my good friend and talented artist, Jasmine Wright of Buju Tattoo in San Diego, CA.




1) Tell us about your featured tattoo- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?

It was my first large tattoo, first with color, first on my arm and the first of many by Jasmine (who did it while she was still apprenticing). I've been collecting owls my entire life, I love that they represent wisdom and happen to be completely adorable. Also, being an avid thrifter and lover of all things vintage, owl goodies were always around my thrift store excursions as a kid, thus my collection and love for them grew. I actually have two owl tattoos so far and hopefully I'll add more!

2) Do you have any other tattoos? If so, what do you have and where? 

I have my entire sleeve on my right arm which includes another owl, a unicorn, pocket watch, venus flytrap, cowgirl boots, a potion bottle, scorpion, and more! I also have a peacock feather on my leg, and the letter V (for vegetarian) on the back of my neck.









3) Do you plan on getting more? 

I have an appointment next week actually! The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of my favorite movies and I'm getting "Don't dream it, be it" tattooed on my thigh.

4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them? Do you have a significant other? Does he/she have tattoos? 

It's been almost totally positive. Everyday people come up to me and want to look and ask me about my tattoos, I love being able to educate people and be involved in such a great community. My friends and family are very openminded and have always nurtured my creativity and taught me to celebrate the things that make you unique. My boyfriend has no tattoos! We met over 6 years ago when I had no tattoos at all. He's not planning on getting any in the near future but he loves my tattoos. I'll support whatever decision he makes with his tattoos, or lack there of.





(Wallas doesn't have any tattoos either.)

5) Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed but haven't gotten one yet?

Pick a great tattooer. Do your research, choose someone who isn't only talented but really respects your style and what you want to express. Stay true to yourself and get what makes you happy!

1) Tell us about the tattoo you are sharing with us- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?

I've always thought deer were beautiful and gentle and have been drawn to images of them in art and photography. I knew I wanted a tattoo of the most handsome deer with flowers and feathers around him. I told my tattoo artist that I wanted him to be delicate and ornate with bright colors (kind of like a Jesus candle, you know, the ones at the grocery store?). Ish's drawing exceeded my expectations, and I am so happy with the tattoo!


2) Do you have any other tattoos? If so, what do you have and where?

I have quite the tattoo collection that is quickly growing! My most favorite is the cupcake on my right foot. Every time the artist colored in a sprinkle he giggled.




On my left wrist I have script that says "To write with light". It's the literal translation of photo-graphie, which is Latin for photography.




There is a pink bunny on my left shoulder carrying a banner that says "LuLu". This one is for my dog. My two nick names for her are fluffy bunny and LuLu.




And on my right arm I have a half sleeve that wraps around my back of a Japanese garden. This one was actually my first real tattoo (I have a small one on my back that will be covered eventually) and I surprised myself and went big! There are peonies, cherry blossoms, and a bird on the inside of my arm, all surrounded by clouds. This piece was done by Carlos Truan in Austin, TX, and I am in love with the bright saturated color and insane detail!








3) Do you plan on getting more?

Yes, I'm definitely getting more. My next one will be a blue carnation on my left elbow. It's my mom's favorite flower. Then I have plans for a Russian nesting doll, and I'm playing with ideas for a side piece.

4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)? Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them?

My family is pretty accepting of my tattoos, even though I'm the only one in my family with any. All of my friends are accepting as well, and the ones without any tattoos love mine. My fiance is also pretty heavily tattooed. He has two Japanese half sleeves that go across his chest, and he'll be extending to full sleeves soon. Most people react to me in a positive way. It's funny how many compliments I get from elderly people and how many people tell me that they normally don't like tattoos but think mine are pretty. I was also surprised at the fact that the more tattoos I got, the more people talked to me about them. I would assume the opposite would happen and I would come across as more intimidating or something. That being said, I have come across negativity as well. Nasty looks, offensive comments, and rude people thinking it's ok to touch me even though we don't know each other. But that all comes with the territory and is to be expected when visibly tattooed. I try not to let mean people get to me.






5) Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed but haven't gotten one yet?

Tattoos can be a great reminder not to take life too seriously. Have fun with them! Just be prepared that after you get your first tattoo you will probably want more. If you get a very meaningful tattoo, keep in mind that if it's in a visible place, people will ask you about it, so make sure it's something you're comfortable talking about to strangers. Also, because you have tattoos other people will want to show you theirs (which gets really annoying). My fiance's favorite saying is "Yes I have tattoos, no I don't want to see yours". And most importantly, find an artist whose style you like, give them artistic freedom (they know what looks good on skin and I've always been blown away at how much better their drawing is than what I had originally imagined), and never bargain hunt.
Oh yeah, and they hurt. ;)

1) Tell us about your featured tattoo- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?

It's an old-school style hot air balloon surrounded by clouds and blue flowers, with some little rain-drops. It's my most recent tattoo, I got it in March this year while I was living in Frankfurt. I moved from New Zealand to Germany in August 2010 and I'd wanted a hot air balloon for a while. I don't really have any meanings behind my tattoos (I just like them visually)  but it seemed to make sense to get it while I was beginning a travel adventure! Sascha painted a watercolor of the design up for me to check out before he tattooed it, and I love the old-school style and colours! It took 4 hours of inking time and I may or may not have had my feet propped up on a 12 pack of toilet paper and given a Scooby-doo lollipop for a sugar hit when I got dizzy towards the end...





2) Do you have any other tattoos?  If so, what do you have and where? 

Yes, they're mostly surrounding my balloon! I've got a blue rose on the inside of my arm which I got in New Zealand in 2008, and a colorful fan design on my upper arm/shoulder (same artist in NZ but in 2010) The balloon fills in the space in-between, and I think Sascha did a great job in 'merging' them. Apart from those, I have a little colourful heart and flower design on my upper back, in the middle, which was my first tattoo when I was 19. And I still like it! ;)





3) Do you plan on getting more?

Yes…. there's still a strip on the underside of my arm I'd like to fill. I have joked about leaving it un-tattooed for when I'm an old lady and get saggy arm skin, I can get it nipped & tucked it without affecting my tattoos, but that's just being silly! ;) I'll get it filled eventually when I find a great artist and think of something I'd really like to go there. I like the idea of 'collecting' tattoos from artists around the world, from the cities I live in or visit.




4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)?  Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them? Do you have a significant other? Does he/she have tattoos? 

My parents like my tattoos- my Dad has a forest scene back-piece and my Mum has some roses and a bird on her back. I started getting interested in tattoos when I was about 12 or 13 when my Dad started his back piece. He took one of my drawings to his tattooist one session, just to show him, and came home telling me his artist thought it was really good- I was so excited! I wanted to be a tattooist ever since then, but my family 'steered' me towards doing a university degree first and then deciding. So now I'm a designer but I'd still love to try my hand at tattooing!




My twin sister has one and is planning a tribute tattoo for her two boys, and quite a few of my friends have them too. I designed a nurse Russian Doll for my friend which covers the side of her thigh, it's really cool having my design on my friends skin forever!  My boyfriend hasn't got any and I don't think he ever will; he's not a huge fan of my tattoos but his attitude is that it's my body, so I can get tattoos if I want!

I haven't experienced any negativity really, but I've had people ask me about them (which is totally fine) or grab my arm as I walk past (not so fine...)




5) Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed but haven't gotten one yet?

Research your tattoo artist, find someone that has a portfolio full of the kind of work you're going for. Expect to go on a long waiting list for a good artist (it'll be worth it)

Eat before your appointment! And take along some real food (like a sandwich or fruit) if it's going to be a long session. Also a sugary drink or candy ;) I'm the queen of shock and fainting so I really need to keep my sugar levels up when being tattooed.

Age of first tattoo: I was 18 and waited till I moved far away from my mom for college to get it. It was a dove on my shoulder and I hid it from her for two years somehow along with a few others I got while living in Flagstaff for college.
Favorite tattoo: Probably my chest piece that is currently being worked on, or my shin tattoo which is my featured tattoo!

Artist/shop/location of feature tattoo: Mykil Zep currently at Black Lantern Tattoo in Phoenix, AZ (Just found out this week he will be relocating to San Diego at the end of the month! Lucky duck!)




1) Tell us about your featured tattoo- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?

While growing up, my best friend Brendan was a huge role model and big brother to my younger brother and sister. He was like loyal to his friends, stood up for the bullies at the bus stop for my siblings, and always super goofy and out there. He would even play video games with my brother until I got home from soccer practice just so he wouldn't have to be home alone ever (my mother worked long and late hours unfortunately). We always joked around that he was a sheep in wolves clothing, opposite of the general comparison because he always acted super tough, but was a softy at heart. Brendan took his own life in 2005, right when I graduated high school and right before I moved 3 hours away from home for college. It was completely devastating to mine and everyone who loved him's world. I knew I would never forget him, but wanted to have something tattooed on me so I could always carry him around with me. Took me 6 years, and my brother finding an old poem he wrote about him at his funeral to finally come up with a tattoo idea. The sheep in wolves clothing, and on my left shin because freshman year of high school he had thrown a rock at me while skateboarding and scarred the middle of my shin pretty well. Seemed to go hand in hand.




2) Do you have any other tattoos?  If so, what do you have and where?

Yes, so many I forget sometimes haha. A Coco Chanel-esque victorian lady on my right arm, pocketwatch right by my elbow, an old phonograph on my lower arm, old film camera on my ditch, “mum” written on my forearm, singer sewing machine on lower arm, tulips on wrist, my brother's initials (NPF) on top side of my wrist, “I am not afraid of tomorrow for I have seen yesterday and I love today” on my inside upper right arm, a victorian pen on the outside of my right arm, an owl and Arizonascape on my left upper arm, a hand holding sunflowers in the shape of the sign language “i love you” on my inner right arm, “beau knows best” on my right forearm, a dove on my right shoulder, a doggie vignette of my pup dori on my left calf, a maple leaf on my right muffintop (haha), “amigos” on my right foot, a gas pump with 13 on it on my right ankle, “little nate” written behind my right ear, the number 7 behind my left ear. A huge spacescape with astronaut on my right thigh, I have "Be Bold" and "Be Love" written on the insides of my fingers on both hands. Oh! And my chest that I am currently finishing that says “Always Looking North” with poppies and leaves around it.













3) Do you plan on getting more?

Yes, it's almost as if I come up with more ideas while I'm half way through a piece. I know for sure my next one is a mock up of my fractured skull on my left side. Back in the end of April I got thrown into the edge of a pooldeck, face first and fractured every bone on the left side of my face. Two surgeries and 5 grand later, I want to have it on me since it has been life changing and really made me realize who my true friends are and how dearly I love my family.





4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)?  Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them?

My family, well, they have been.... interesting. I hid my tattoos for 2 years before my mom found out through a picture message I sent my step-dad that I had gotten a new one. My step dad has been my best friend since he came into our lives and was pretty understanding at first (he hid his from my mom for almost a year! Tell me how that worked haha). It has taken a lot of patience and explanations of the meanings of all of them for my mom to finally come around. My brother and sister love them, my mom cried when I told her about the ones I got for her, but the rest of my family is pretty against them. My grandmother slapped me when she first found out. I think part of it has to do with the whole different generation thing and also my family grew up on a tiny farm in North Dakota, so they really have never been exposed to it. Part of my family automatically assumed I was doing drugs as well, so that was kind of hard to deal with at first. I figure everyone has their own opinion, and I am completely comfortable in my own skin, so why the hell should I really care.

Most of my friends are covered in tattoos, and so they obviously love my tattoos and are always eager to get new ones when they see I've recently gotten stuff done.





5) Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed but haven't gotten one yet?

Have fun with it! I feel like not all tattoos need to have meaning behind them, it could be that you were feeling spontaneous one day and really wanted to get something done. Just make sure that you go to a good shop, there are plenty of chintzy shops that you can go to, but just remember there are diseases and infections you can get if you compromise just to simply get one. Be sure you're comfortable with people staring, people will judge no matter how times change, and realize that people are curious and may ask you about them. That's part of the fun about making yourself a walking canvas of beautiful work! And yes, it DOES hurt, but it's definitely worth it.

*I wanted to leave a quick little note about today's Tattoo Tuesday- Heidi (the featured fellow's gf) is a long time friend of mine and one of my Tattoo Tuesday girls way back when (see her post here). When she mentioned that Chad would contribute too, I was ecstatic, and I think you guys will really enjoy his feature- be sure to check out Heidi's too!

Favorite tattoo: Stoney Smokin’ Lizard

Featured tattoo/location: Two Snakes wrapped around a lit torch on the inside of my forearm. 

Artist/shop/location of feature tattoo: Brett Osborne from Houston, Texas. Location of the tattoo was actually in Hollywood at a tattoo shop he was doing a guest spot for.  This took roughly a 7 hour session to finish the tattoo.





1) Tell us about your featured tattoo- is there a background story or special meaning? Why did you choose this particular piece of art?
  
Well my entire right arm is a concept of Adam and Eve and the Origin of Sin.  I grew up a Christian. Although I don’t go to church as much as I’d like and might not live the perfect Christian life, it doesn’t mean that I still don’t believe. I think at first glance the pieces could be perceived as a little “sinister” or “dark” but is far from this.





2) Do you have any other tattoos?  If so, what do you have and where?

Well to the left of the snakes and the torch there is a rotten apple that has been bitten into and a “mist” (sin) leaking out. Above that is a skeleton angel with a broken halo and pink and blue light rays shining from the break.

I have the lower half of my left arm done. Artist is Chrissy Summers who now resides in California, previously here in AZ. I have a skull with some orchid flowers around it and on the inside I have a girl holding an injured bird and an anatomical heart with a keyhole on my wrist with the shape of a key in negative space.




I have a tree that is going up the side of my body, the trunk of the tree by my right hip with the branches reaching out onto my chest. On my stomach I have a bat with its wings spread out wide, all in which were done by Brett Osbourne.

On my right ankle I have my “Stoney Lizard”, a purple lizard that has cashed red eyes and blowing out smoke. Above that is a skull with a mustache wearing a sombrero. On my calf is my very first tattoo that I got, which is a geisha girl with a snake wrapping around her gazing into her eyes with a big knife going thru the back of her head. This is probably the most “violent” tattoo out of them all.




On my left leg I have the start of a leg sleeve. Its going to be a Final Fantasy concept. I am indefinitely a videogame nerd. At this stage of the leg sleeve I have around my ankle a Moogle riding a Chocobo with 2 more Chocobos running along side it, behind that is a Tonberry. I plan to color all of this and is being done by Michael Blackstone from San Diego.





3) Do you plan on getting more?


 I have a lot of my body already planned out. I want both arms and legs and my torso done. Not too sure about tattooing my back or neck. I guess we will see in the future of my tattoos.

My newest addition is the crazy lookin’ dude wearing a gas mask on my upper thigh. The artist I got that done by is Darren Yeisley, who no longer lives in Arizona and is the person who worked on my ladies arm as well. (find him on facebook!)


I have my Final Fantasy leg sleeve worked out. Up on the top of my leg I’m getting Bahamut being attacked by airships and meteors falling from the sky.

Underneath my Stoney Lizard on my right foot I’m going to get a few baby lizards that cracked out of their shell and have smoke seeping out from inside the shells.

Those are all my ideas that I have for the moment. But I’m always non-stop thinking of what else to get.





4) How do your family and friends feel about your tattoo(s)?  Have you run into any adversity or negativity because of them? Do you have a significant other? Does he/she have tattoos? 
  
My family doesn’t necessarily LOVE my tattoos but they know that it is a part of me and my lifestyle and are so accepting. They do love the quality and imagery overall but still don’t completely understand. My older brother has a few tattoos, as my younger brother has 1” ½  guages and sees tattoos in his future. For my mom’s birthday I surprised her with a trip to get her first tattoo. Her tattoo is no bigger than a size of a quarter and let’s just say a few tears were shed that day. She says she cannot believe that I “put myself through so much pain”, but she is even talking about getting more. You can say we are a bit of a toned down version of the “Osbournes”.  

 

Most of my friends have tattoos. My long-time girlfriend Heidi (who in which was also featured in one of your previous Tattoo Tuesday posts) has one of the most amazing sleeves I’ve seen, & I don’t believe I’m being too bias on that. We sit down and brainstorm a lot about what our next tattoo should be. It’s fun being able to feed off of each other’s ideas. I have so many people especially when we are together, approaching us about our tattoos, and they want to share theirs with us as well. 




Pretty much everyone I’m surrounded by have tattoos, especially working with a lot of folks in the music industry. It is now becoming more of a common thing with everyone so there isn’t as much negativity towards people with tattoos. I try to surround myself in an atmosphere that feels accepting and creatively driven. People who have tattoos that exude quality, creativity & originality I can’t help but to hold a bit higher. I think a lot of people do this. It takes a lot of time and effort to research great artists & flow with them to make your tattoo idea come to life.

I also think it’s important for you to know when and where it’s appropriate to have your tattoos out. I know it is an expression of yourself but the fact is people still judge & stare and can make pretty off assumptions about your character without even listening to what you’re all about.






5) Any advice for those interested in getting tattooed but haven't gotten one yet?

Yeh. Don’t just go to any tattoo artist. Don’t worry about how much it will be or how long his/her wait is for you to get it. Your friend might do it for you for free. But it’s going to look like a free tattoo.
